Licence F.A.Q

Rod Fishing Licence - Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the rod licence, as well as the different types of licence available and where to buy them.

Do I need a rod licence?

Anyone over the age of 12 who wishes to fish for freshwater fish and eels in England, Wales or the Border Esk region of Scotland requires a rod licence to fish with a rod and line. If you are fishing for coarse fish with 3 or 4 rods then you need two licences.

Where can I buy my rod licence?

Rod licences are available from Post Office outlets throughout England and Wales, online, by direct debit and over the telephone on 0844 800 5386. The phone line is open from 8.30am to 8.00pm daily from March to September and 8.30am to 6.30pm from October to February.

When will my licence run out?

If you buy a full licence it will run out on the 31st March unless you have bought a new season licence in advance. 1-day licences are valid for 24 hours from the start time and 8-day licences are valid for 192 consecutive hours from the start time.

How soon after buying my rod licence can I fish?

If you have bought a full licence for this season you are covered to go fishing immediately. You will receive a till receipt (from Post Office branches) or confirmation e-mail (for online or telephone purchases) to confirm that your purchase has been successfully processed. If you have bought a 1 or 8-day licence you can fish from the start date. Again, you will receive a till receipt or confirmation e-mail to confirm that your purchase has been successfully processed.

When will I receive my licence?

Licences are not posted for 1 and 8-day licences. Full licences are sent out within a couple of days of you buying the licence. If you have not received your licence seven days after buying it then please call us on 08708 506 506 and we can look into this for you.

I have bought a trout and coarse rod licence and want to fish for salmon, do I need to buy a new licence?

It is possible to upgrade your trout and coarse licence to a salmon and sea trout licence throughout the year. To upgrade your licence you must take it to a Post Office branch. You’ll need to pay the difference in cost between the licences. The Post Office will keep your trout and coarse licence and a salmon and sea trout licence will be posted to you.

Can I get a concessionary rod licence?

Concessions are available for juniors aged between 12 and 16 years old, seniors aged 65 years and over and disabled anglers who are in receipt of a Blue Badge or Disability Living Allowance. Your eligibility for a concession may be checked against the information you provide as part of the application process.

I have receive a renewal letter in the post. How do I renew my rod licence?

If you have received a renewal letter in the post check that all the details are correct. If they are then either take your letter with you when you go to the Post office, or choose the renewal option online and over the telephone. You will be able to renew your licence without having to provide all your details again. If your details on the letter are incorrect then you will need to buy a licence by providing your details again. This will ensure we have the correct details for you on our database. You do not need to keep your renewal letter after renewing your licence.

Do I need a renewal letter to buy a licence?

No, not at all. If you have not received a renewal letter or don’t have it to hand when you are renewing you can still buy a licence online. You will just need to input your name and address details.

I have lost my rod licence and need a replacement, what do I do now?

If you have lost your rod licence or it has been destroyed then you can get a replacement licence. To get a replacement you will need to call us on 08708 506 506. There is a £5 (£1 for juniors) charge for a replacement licence payable by debit/ credit card, cheque or postal order.

I have changed my name and address, what do I do now?

If you change your name and address details please let us know by calling our National Customer Contact Centre on 08708 506 506 so that we can update our records.

I want a refund on my rod licence, is this possible?

Trip to Marks

Arrived on Tuesday afternoon, my mate picked me up from the station, then it was on to see 10Bob, We just arrived at the club water and he had landed this magnificent TENCH

user posted image

The picture does not do the fish justice, a cracker of a fish. Well done Bob.

Tuesday night, LoL, well i was visiting my freind and his delightful family, a super dinner off Lesley, and late it was off to the pub, LoL, Mathew ( my mates son ) and his girlfriend joined us later, As ever we sampled a few beers at The Mason Arms, very nice.

We rose on Wednesday morning and had a chat about the weatherm, BLOODY HEAVY rain, we decisded not to go fishing, if we had set up and it was fair it would have been OK, but setting up in the rain was not on,LoL, fairweather anglers, LoL

We had a few places to visit and some more old aquaintnesses to visit, so we spend the day doing that, :chuckle: along with a few beers, LoL

Right then FISHING, oops, We also went to the pub on Wwednesday evening, LoL. SORRY, FISHING

Thursday, great weather, we were up and ready and out for 8am. We got to the venue some 20 minutes later, I was not dissapointed, the peg i had chose was free, we tackled up and set about the days fishing. I fished the waggler with great results and my mate fished the pole, again with great results.

Then a chap came and started to chat, i asked him if he was wondering who i was, the chap was a co owner of the water, so i told him i was a guest of my mates, it turned out he was the ex chair of the club, a founder member, we had a great chat, and he assured me i would be more than welcome any time i wished, LoL

I was only fishing about a rods length out, not deep, about 3.5feet. I had worms, pellet and maggot for bait, i was feeding s few maggots and some feed pellets every half hour or sio, i used worm as hookbait,

I think i was the first to land a fish, a nice roach of about 12oz, fin perfect. but i wanted the tench to take my bait, and i was not let down, i rebaiyted and this time i tipped the worm with a maggot, i then proceded to make a cuppa, i just caught the float dissapear out the corner of my eye, A short fisht ensued, the fish ran for the lilly pads, TENCH i though, and i was not wrong, a nice tench of about 3lbish, but i may be wrong, again the camera does not do the fish justice

user posted image

I was a very happy bunny, and i could not wait to gety my float out again,, LoL a shot of my float, notice the lillies where the fish tend to run for,

user posted image

I continued to land more roach, rud, slimmers and perch, the all of a sudded, my clutch went BERSERK, i picked my rod up and whatever it was on the hook SCREAMED away, i could not stop it !!! again it headed for the lilliesw, ahad it on for a good few minutes, BANG it got off, i was gutted, no point in guessing what is was, TENCH, CARP or a BARBEL that inhabits the water, they are said to have got in the water when the beck flooded, but who knows what took my hookbait.. my mate had also been snapped, ON A 20 LACCY , same fish or not, i would not like to say
As the day wore on Mark and myself continued to catch at a steady pace.

We decided to pack up at 4pm. We packed and cleaned whet rubbish we had, a couple of empty bacon packets, LoL. my mate had done the cooking, and i must admit the bacon sarbies were very nice.

It was a great day with my very good friend Masrk, great fishing for a first time on the water.
The place itself, great pegs, very comfy and easy to access, park behind almost all of the pegs, NO RUBBISH whatsoever, a very clean, respectable venue, and i eagerly await my next venue, in fact i asked if i could join LoL.

Once again another very enjoyable stay with Leslkey and my mate, great hosts and company in the bars, LoL, and great food prepared by Lesley, oh and my mate made some tea now and again LoL

Thanks yet again Lesley and my mate, very much appreciated

Portglenone, Ireland

Wednesday 8th November
I was waiting at Belfast International Airport arrivals lounge when my mobile began to ring.

Hello Ron,i said

Where are you ?, said Ron, in the arrivals lounge, said i, I'll be there in a couple of minutes. I then picked up my bag and began to make my way out.

Outside i negotiated the traffic when i heard ANDY, i looked up and i saw who i thought was Ron, after a double take, my wave turned into a pointed finger, i could not take in who was there, not 100 yards away, i squinted my eye's to make sure it was who i was looking at, yes it was him MARK.a very ggod friend of mine. The two of them had kept it a secret from me that Mark was coming over. The greeting was done and then Ron, Becky and Nicky appeared from behind the bushes.
After a lot of chit chat about my suprise it was off to meet Shona. Another warm welcome i must say.

Fishing,

Portgelone, i had a good amount of roach, the river was cold, and a bit slow in running, but still very enjoyable, the craic was great, i never let Mark forget what he and Ron done to me,

Not many pictures were taken during the visit, the fishing was a bit hard, so it was action stations all round, but i did manage to get a few.

Day Five, match day with Lower Bann Coarse Angling Club.

A decent turnout with 10 club members and two guests, the guests being Colin and myself.

Colin picked the hot peg, number one, i picked 6 and Ron picked peg 8.
Tackle up and a wait for the " ALL IN " shout, which came at 10.30.

First cast for me saw a roch, but i lost it at the net :talktothehand: , then after that it went quiet for an hour or so. I kept feeding at a steady pace, The fishing was very slow to say the least, that slow infact i dozed off on my chair :sleepy13: . I awoke with a start. I continued to feed the swim. More roach came to me net, 7 in all and one gudgeon.

I walked to peg one to chat with Colin. He was fiaring well with roach. He had a 5lb+bag at the weigh in.
Ron done well on his peg, with 30 odd fish which weighed in at 6lb dead.

The pegs were all very unproductive today !!!!! but thats fishing.

Sorry no pictures, forgot my camera, and i also forgot my lucky hat

Part Four

Back to Gilmores Shore for day four, just Ron and myself went today, Colin was busy.

I jumped on peg one again and Ron chose peg three.Same tactics for the both of us, feeder fishing.
The river looked slughtly down from yesterday, and a little less flow.
Sport was good today, good quality roach, however the bream did not show in numbers, BUT i did manage one today. :fishing2:

After we packed up we had to dash to meet up with Colin about tomorrow's match, the Big Fella has the day off for the match.

We dashed into Belfast Angling Cerntre for some last minute bits of tackle, 5.16pm, they close at 5.30

So with fresh bait for tomorrow the fish had better watch out

Ireland 2

So into the third day and Ron, Colin and myself decided that Gilmores was as good a venue as any.................so all met up at 6.30am.

Todays pegging plan was me on peg1 AGAIN, Ron on peg2 and Colin on peg3.

The river was in good flow, a tad higher than yesterday but still fishable. As we set up and the first light of day broke through the rain started to fall. Not too heavy but a bit of a concern with the river already high. Thankfully it was only a few showers that we had to suffer and the sun finally broke through later into the morning.

Very, very slow start with next to nothing happening for the first hour but eventually Andy got the pan on and bacon chunk sarnies were cooked by andy. Colin "the sausage burner" avoided the allocated cooking chores for now...............probably just as well all the same.

A few roach were had by all in the early part of the day. It was hard to get a bed of feed to sit and fish over and sometimes difficult to hold your bait in the intended spot. Ron managed a bream after a while followed by another. Poor ol me and Colin struggled with bits.

As the day wore on Rons swim improved and I managed a couple more bream. One of which scared the living daylights out of Colin as it slapped its tail on the surface as I turned it from the reeds.

My swim proved hard work and a bit of makem cursing coloured the Kilrea air.

Colin managed around 25 fish, roach and skimmers.

I finished with around 16 fish, quality roach, skimmers and a stonking stripey.

Ron must have had devine intervention as my swim produced 7 bream and a good mixed bag of the usual.

The tail slapper.......................and cause of Colins soiled underwear.

So tonight we are on babysitting duties while Shona has to work, back out tomorow morning. Three guesses where? I'm determined..............i want to get back on Gilmores to beat the bream.
Later.

Ireland Trip

Ok. Going to try and get some pics and a bit of a report on.

Yesterday, as previously stated, Loughall Country Park was the venue. Big Colin, Ron ,Rons son Johnny and moi arrived at the venue for shortly after 9am. We had some of the gear kindly carried around to our chosen pegs by one of the greenkeepers in a golf buggy. A lovely looking 18 hole golf course is also contained within the country park.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i155/ron...rannogSmall.jpg
The Crannog. Colin and myself fished over to this island, both using boilies and both getting nowt.

I fished the feeder and almost immediately had bites resulting in roach and perch catches.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i155/ron...dyspegSmall.jpg

My peg....................he is so messy without Mark there keeping him right.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i155/ron...inspegSmall.jpg

Colin on his peg........................hit a few fish on his new float rod using waggler tactics.

user posted image

Johnny on his peg. Shhhhhhhh................Losing my spinners and fishing for squirrels in the branches tired the wee man out.

user posted image

After trying boilles and the method feeder with no joy I resorted to bashing a few roach on the pole.

I hit a good bream on the feeder using maggot hookbait.

user posted image

All in all not a great days fishing for most of us.....................Beautiful venue all the same. A well kept fishery with helpfull staff. We all decided we wouldnt be put off by our performance and another visit will be organised. If we had one complaint it would be that the fishery doesnt open till 9am and closes at 8.30pm......................I dont know about you but I would like to fish outside both those times.

So homeward bound, quick shower, dinner, lift to pub by my good lady wife and a few cold, wet ones. Mark matey you were sorely missed ..............................as was your round of drinks.

Today. As arranged, up bright and early much to Rons delight and met up with Big Colin at Portglenone. From there drove on up to Gilmores Shore for a day of fishing on the Bann. Arrived and fishing for shortly after 7am.

River was running through surprisingly heavy and 50g to 70g was needed to hold throughout the day. I got peg1 as promised..................a cracking peg renowned for holding Bream. Colin went peg2 with myself on peg3.

I hit fish from the off, roach and skimmers. Colins swim and my own were slower to develope with the pair of us not even getting bites till a good hour and a bit in.
I by this stage had a bream in the net with a whole clatter of quality roach. Ron finally got bites and managed a couple of bream. Colin was still struggling hitting only odds and sods.

user posted image

My peg and feeding station. Note that the very kind Mark had left us his brolly to protect the chef from the elements. How do we know it was Marks brolly?

user posted image

Simple......................Mark writes his name on everything.

So after I served up a culinary delight of bacon and sausage sandwiches it was back to the fishing.

So the fishing continued till mid afternoon. Andy managed a good bag of fish by the end of play but unfortunately only two bream.

One of my bream which I think Colin was trying to stake a claim to. Would you argue with him?

Big Col had a bit of a stinker but still managed some good roach and skimmers.

Ron finished up with just the five bream and a mixed bag of roach and skimmers

Rons far too much of a modest chap but if you would like to ask me or Colin about the 15 minute challange Im sure one of the two will fill in the details for ya's.

And so to the end of day two. The best of it all is we are going back to the same venue, same time tomorrow!

A week away

First of all i would like to thank Les for his great hospitality. He called me on the 18th May to say he would be up this neck of the woods and asked me if i would like to spend the week with him fishing our club waters. It was an offer i could not refuse.

Anyway fishing.

Friday

The first day, Friday saw us at Blyton, a cracking pond stocked with, Tench, Carp, Skimmer, Roach and Chub. For bait we had red maggot and white maggot, pellets, sweetcorn and bread. We both fished the waggler. We tackled up and then we decided to go for a full English, two bacon, two sausages, mushrooms, black pudding, eggs and fried bread, washed down with a fine mug of tea.

Les was the first to land a fine roach, they were followed by more. I was soon into the roach, again followed by more, then the skimmers moved in for both of us. We both fished at close range, not even a rod length out. It was great fun on the waggler, i had not had a full session for years waggler fishing. Must do it more often.
It was a great day's fishing, we a good mate on a good venue and good weather.

Saturday

Again back to Blyton, and what a cracking day it was.

I started fishing the feeder yet again, Les and i had the same pegs, Les started on the waggler. Agin roach, skimmers were the mainstay of the catch, we both had a good amount. I lost count how many i had landed.

Les decided to fish the pole, ( NODDY ANGLING ) and what a choice it was. He fished floating bread and it proved the right choice. Carp after carp came for the floating bread. In al he must have had around 25+
Here's a few pictures of the the average carp we were catching. Les was a very happy bunny on Saturday

We called it a day and returned to Les's. We both hod a fresh cupa, then a shower, then off to the pub for a few beers. After the pub it was PIZZA time, MEATY FEAST, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Sunday

We decided to go to another club water today, what a day, the day was blazing down, very hot and no wind.
We went to a place called North Whatley. a little irigation water near Gainsborough.
Here's a picture of Les on his peg

I dont know if it was the heat but the fishing was slow, small roach did come to the baits, but after the day before it was a bit of a let down, but we were both catching. Les got the better roach of the day, and here it is

.

We called it a day at around 2pm, we decided to go home for a few hours and then off to Blyton for an evening session.
Yet again we were soon catching roach and skimmers. We both fished the waggler again. But again, i dont know if it was the heat of the day but the fish were not in abundance like the day before. But it was great fun.

Monday
No fishing today, we had a run to Mickleover to see Mark and his family. We arrived there at around 11am, Mrk and Lesley were still out, but Emma was in the house. Greeting and soon a hot tea was o the table. Mark and Lesley arrived shortly.Another cup of tea and a chat, oh and a few little nipping bites off Poppy, a smashing little puppy she is. Mark invited us out for lunch, and i would like to thank him again for the lunch. After lunch we visited a place very familiar to a lot of people. Can you guess where. LoL

Here's the giveaway. LoL

It was great to see the river again in all its splendour. We had a walk the full length of the stretch, stopping at each peg.

Here's Les and i on peg one.

Hopefuly we might get an invite to fish the stretch in the coming season, rolleyes.gif fishing1.gif

Tuesday was a non fishing day also, we had a look around the club waters. dt.gif

Wednesday

Back again to Blyton. Another great day on the waggler for both of us. Carp, roach and skimmers, i did land a cracking chub, all on the waggler.
Below is my best of the day

The wather was getting worse by the minute, the wind was blowing our brollies almost inside out, and it was getting colder. So we decided to call it a day.
On the way home we popped into Yaddlethorpe Ponds, nice and sheltered so we decided to have a few hours. The we both fished the waggler again, and soon after the firsy cast the roach came to the baits, in all i had 6 roach and three perch. We stayed for about an hour and ½. Another good day altho the weather tried its best to spoil it. Back to Les's. We got fed and had a couple of beers. An early night was clled for, i think the wind and rain took its toll.

Thursday

Back to Blyton, The weather was kinder today, slight wind and sunshine, We chose diffrent pegs today. I fished the waggler again, Les fished the pole and waggler.
I had a terrific day with the roach and skimmer, i lost count at 70+ roch and at least a dozen skimmers. Les was into the roach also. It was a pleasant day with great chatter.

Friday, today was time to come home, up nice and early, showered and ready, Les dropped me off at the station and it was a nice comfy train ride home
The summing up M'Lud

A cracking weeks fishing with Les on cracking waters. Great craic and great company. The fishing, cracking stuff. What more could anyone want.

Once again Les, a thanks very much for your very kind offer and hospitality mate. Until the next time
